2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Cresols in the United States

چکیده
Cresols are widely distributed in the environment and the general population may be exposed to low levels of cresols mainly through the inhalation of contaminated air. Cresols are readily degraded in the atmosphere; atmospheric concentrations outside of source-dominated areas are typically low. Since cresols are released via automobile exhaust, areas of high traffic and gas stations are likely to have increased atmospheric levels of cresols. Cresols are also the product of combustion of coal, wood, and municipal solid waste; therefore, residents near coal and petroleum fueled facilities, as well as residents near municipal waste incinerators, may have increased exposure to cresols. There are limited air monitoring data for cresols; a median concentration of 1.5 μg/m o-cresol was detected in air samples from 3 locations, the range of p-cresol at 11 locations was 0.5–20 μg/m, and m-cresol was not detected in air samples from 2 locations. A national emissions study conducted from 1990 to 1998 reported a county-level estimated ambient average concentration of 31.7 ng/m for all cresol isomers combined.

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Creosote in the United States
Wood creosotes are derived from the resin from leaves of the creosote bush (Larrea, referred to herein as creosote bush resin) and beechwood (Fagus, referred to herein as beechwood creosote). Creosote bush resin consists of phenolic (e.g., flavonoids and nordihydroguaiaretic acid), neutral (e.g., waxes), basic (e.g., alkaloids), and acidic (e.g., phenolic acids) compounds. The phenolic portion ...

Toxaphene is a manufactured pesticide comprising a complex mixture of hundreds of chlorinated terpenes. After DDT was banned from use in the United States in 1972, toxaphene became the most popular substitute. Control of pests on cotton crops was the principal use of toxaphene in the United States, although the pesticide was used to control a variety of insects on a range of crops and to eradic...
متن کامل2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Perfluoroalkyls in the United States
Perfluoroalkyls constitute a class of compounds that have been used extensively in surface coating and protectant formulations due to their unique surfactant properties. Major applications have included protectants for paper and cardboard packaging products, carpets, leather products, and textiles that enhance water, grease, and soil repellency. Perfluoroalkyls have also been used as processing...

Trichloroethylene is a major nonflammable industrial solvent. In 2011, the estimated capacity of the commercial production of trichloroethylene in the United States was 270 million pounds. Historically, the most important use of trichloroethylene has been vapor degreasing of metal parts. This use has declined over the past decade due to increased environmental regulations governing trichloroeth...

DDT is an organochlorine insecticide that has found a broad range of agricultural and nonagricultural applications in the United States and worldwide beginning in 1939. In 1972, DDT use was banned in the United States and in many parts of the world, except for use in controlling emergency public health problems. DDT is still used in certain parts of the world to control vector-borne diseases, s...
